At the Bird Cage Station, we understand the importance of proper care that's matched by practical, yet stylish, housing. We also know that it's sometimes a challenge to provide the right accessories that keep birds happy and well-adjusted. Many types enjoy human interaction while other species thrive well in an appropriate caged environment with interactive toys and treats
It's easy to locate the right sized home for your small, medium or large bird species. You'll find a wide variety of shapes and features within each category. Your bird's habitat should also be easy to clean and provide a safe haven. You should plan for room to add hanging toys and feeders. Be sure there's space for your bird to stretch. The interior area should be at least 1.5 times the extended wingspan. Also, be sure that birds with longer tail feathers can perch with clearance on all sides and the bottom.
Smaller cages also feature wire construction, while medium and large sizes are often crafted in wrought iron or other metals. They should be constructed to withstand the strong beaks of some species, including macaws, as well as notorious chewers such as cockatoos. It's also critical to make a selection based on bar spacing. Smaller birds should not be able to extend their heads through the bars. A rule-of-thumb measurement is ½-inch or less for small birds and ½-1 inch for medium species. Larger birds will be safe in a cage with bars of 1 inch or more.
In addition, our cages also feature both horizontal and vertical grid designs. Verticals are fine for the non-climbers that include canaries and finches. On the other hand, horizontal bars or breaks provide footing for those that do like to climb such as cockatiels and parakeets.
You can also create a mini-aviary with flight cages that some birds will absolutely love. These are excellent for small birds that enjoy company of their own kind and will let them exercise in safer confines rather than roaming through your home. Other styles include playtops with specially designed outside perches for greater interaction. Decorative designs are also crafted to provide a custom look and still keep your birds safely contained.
A stand is an essential investment, too. This will place your bird cage at the appropriate level for increased enjoyment and access. Choose a height that will elevate the perching area so your bird can look up to you without feeling intimidated.
Just like other family pets, there is no end to the selection of accessories that will keep your bird happy and playful. Extra perches allow for movement and give birds different textures on which to land or groom their beaks. Macaws, for instance, always appreciate an open floor stand that lets them mingle with humans. Branches and ropes also provide fun challenges and physical activity. Toys are also important to keep your feathered friend occupied. Many birds respond best with a variety that assures they're busy when you're away for the day. Specialty wood items are crafted in non-toxic paints. In time, however, excessive chewing may take its toll, so it's recommended to rotate on a regular basis.
At night, you'll want some peace and quiet and a cover for the cage should do the trick. They'll feel cozy and warm in a draft-free environment, plus it allows them to get needed sleep. Even the most lively talkers and squawkers won't be able to resist the confines of a dark, protective space for the evening.
We know you'll enjoy the wide range of products specifically selected for your birds and for you to enjoy.
